Lake Victoria Kenya, Kenya
An idyllic oasis on an exotic Lake Victoria island, Mfangano Island Camp provides the perfect pre or post safari escape. You’re many miles from anywhere or anyone, drifting off to an indulgent atmosphere. Time ceases to exist and shoes aren’t required as you slumber at one Africa’s most laid-back destinations.
You’ll appreciate the remoteness of the camp on the journey in. Mfangano stands alone in Lake Victoria, accessible only via a light aircraft then boat transfer. You couldn’t get more remote, a fact that always helps romance to flourish. Once you’ve settled in there’s little to think about, as all meals are provided and a local guide takes you out onto the lake in a traditional dhow sailboat.
Each of the six terracotta cottages are hidden beneath giant fig trees and built using the local Luo style. We think it gives off an air of authenticity, helping to add a dose of culture to a retreat that’s mostly centred on escaping the world. It’s impossible not to relax here and the dreamy Lake Victoria mornings are a contrast to the adventures you’ll have had on safari.
This is island life, as serene and friendly as you could wish for. While many people beeline for Kenya’s coast, Mfangano Island Camp is more exclusive and remote, and the water is just as pretty.
