Tarangire National Park, Tanzania
Situated in a private concession, just outside Tarangire National Park, Tarangire River Camp offers an iconic tented camp experience. Elephants and giraffe are always wandering past, providing the charming constant as you lounge on a private verandah. Baboons and vervet monkeys are also abundant and you wouldn’t be the first to wake up to buffalos grazing the other side of the canvas.
We love how the camp blends into nature, hidden amongst a forest of baobab and acacia trees. Safari never stops here and we’ve been treated to mating lions barely half a kilometre from the tents; the virile roars left goosebumps at regular intervals.
The 21 spacious safari tents are raised on wooden platforms. Each has a verandah with day bed that peers over the water; you’ll love watching the elephants taking a drink as sunset starts to paint the sky. Being outside the national park, Tarangire River Camp is also excellent value. You’re still immersed in nature, but the comfortable accommodation is cheaper than options within the park.
The park gate is less than two miles away so it’s easy to be game driving in the park at sunrise. Tents have flush toilets and hot showers; we think their simplicity suits the beauty of the natural environment.
