One&Only Nyungwe House
Nyungwe Forest Reserve, Rwanda
One&Only Nyungwe House provides all the mod cons and it’s one of the most European-feeling lodges found in East Africa. You can immediately sense that it’s owned and operated by a major international hotel company. However, traditional touches are dotted about and the vistas are a poignant reminder that you’re deep in wild Africa.
We love the attention to detail, for example, the fine dining cuisine that’s served in a variety of locations, so each day feels a little different and celebrates a different view.
The 24 luxury rooms are spread across six wooden villas, then there are two lavish presidential suites that come with a private jacuzzi. Every room has a glorious wooden deck with views over the forest and there’s a good chance of seeing a few of Nyungwe Forest’s 13 primate species directly from your room. They might even be jumping around as you enjoy sundowners around the open fire.
Activities at the lodge are centred around primate walks and treks in the national park. This is a great place to go chimpanzee trekking and a quarter of Africa’s primates can be spotted on a multi-day stay. Cultural and birdwatching walks are also offered and the sheer range of trails means that the activities are always tailored.
