Virunga Lodge

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

The views from Virunga Lodge will stay with you for a lifetime. Perched on a ridge overlooking Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, the lodge has one of our favourite locations in the whole of Africa; you’ll quickly be wowed by the natural splendour.

Each of the ten stone bandas reflect the local building style and exude a sense of African chic. It’s all very kind to the environment with minimum-impact bathrooms and solar power. It’s also very comfortable. The en-suite bathrooms have double vanity sinks plus spacious warm showers for after your gorilla trek. We love how Virunga Lodge feels luxurious, yet is able to blend effortlessly into the natural surroundings.

It’s an hour’s drive from Volcanoes National Park headquarters and while there are lodges that are closer than this, the views more than compensate. It feels like you’re a part of the forest. And it feels like you’re a part of Rwanda, as local dance troupes perform during the evening and the meals blend local and international influences.

The service is of an exceptional quality and your stay comes with a complementary massage. Local guides organise short activities, such as walks in the surrounding area, so there’s always something to do. However, after a day of gorilla trekking, nothing beats sitting back and soaking up the panoramas.

Children are welcome and the deluxe bandas can sleep two children staying with their parents.

March to May and October to mid-December is low season.
