Lake Kariba & Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe
Venture just off the shoreline of Matusadona National Park and you’ll find Musango Safari Camp, a beautiful luxury lodge nestled on an island on Lake Kariba. We quickly fell in love with this rustic yet elegant lodge, with its kooky architecture and wonderful wildlife spotting opportunities.
The main lodge area will make your jaw-drop. The two-storey viewing platform is reminiscent of a treehouse, with a thatch roof, open walls, and rural yet strong wooden beams effortlessly holding it all together. The ground level has a cosy lounge area fit with a cool bar and dining room for social meals with other travellers, whilst upstairs you’ll find comfy seating areas for sipping your first morning coffee and watching the sun rise.
There are six standard rooms, all with twin beds and set amongst the verdant forest, whilst the two honeymoon suites are built of stone and thatch, and feature a private veranda and a plunge pool. All of them adopt a classic safari vibe with their neutral colours and rustic décor.
This is a great lodge for families given its brilliant activities both at the lodge, and out in the wilderness. Beautiful bushbuck roam freely around the island, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to feed them, as well as the curious catfish that swim around the shallows of the lake in the early evening. The surrounding area is also dotted with fascinating fossils and animal skeletons for the kids to explore, plus a swimming pool and a hammock. The island is completely safe, so your family can walk through the winding forest path and look for tropical birds if you so wish.
