Nostalgic South Africa, Zimbabwe & Botswana
If like us you love to journey back to a time of understated luxury and a slower pace of life, this itinerary is perfect for you.
Pretoria
Here at Africa Sky we truly believe that your first night should be as memorable as your last. With this in mind, on arrival at the airport you will be collected and enjoy a private transfer to one of the most luxurious hotels in the heart of the ‘City of Gold’, The Court Classique Suite Hotel. Famous for housing Nelson Mandela after he was released from prison, you can’t help but be moved as you walk the corridors with walls adorned with photographs depicting the history of this house. One thing you can be sure of tonight is a great night’s sleep.
Pretoria to Victoria Falls
The rest of your adventure begins in Pretoria as you step on board the elegant Rovos Rail and are immediately immersed into the spirit of a by-gone era. You will have three nights to enjoy this stunning locomotive as it winds its way through Warmbaths, famous for its mineral waters, and then Nylstroom at the source of the River Nile before crossing the Tropic of Capricorn en-route to the boarder with Zimbabwe. Your second day on board sees you travelling towards Bulawayo which is the gateway to Matobo National Park, home of wildlife such as rhinos and black eagles. After another comfortable night in your beautiful wood-panelled suite your journey through Zimbabwe continues along one of the world’s longest stretches of straight railway line – 114 Kilometres – before traversing Hwange National Park. This area is rich with wildlife and sightings from the train are not unusual but you will also enjoy more up close and personal sightings from the comfort of a game drive vehicle in the afternoon. The following morning as you arrive into Victoria Falls, your train adventure may have come to an end but your African adventure certainly hasn’t.
Victoria Falls
Known as the ‘Smoke that thunders’ by the local people, this phenomenon is the largest single curtain of falling water in the world. Although viewing the Falls from both the Zambian side and the Zimbabwe side is a unique and special experience, we love this side as 70% of the views are seen from the Zimbabwe rain forest. For bird lovers, there are species here that you won’t find anywhere else. But there is so much more to this place than just the Falls. A sunset cruise on the Zambezi River will reward you with the most stunning photography. There are also cultural village tours which give you the chance to interact with the communal villagers and get a real insight into their daily routines. If you would rather spend some time relaxing, we think we have found the perfect place for you with a two- night stay at Mpala Jena Camp. Located in the Zambezi National Park in an incredible setting away from the hustle and bustle of town.
Linyanti Wetlands
Overlooking the crystal waters of the Zibadianja lagoon, we have found a real gem for you to complete this sensational journey which has allowed you to step back in time. The Zarafa Camp is an intimate and exquisite tented camp. Have your cameras and your binoculars at the ready over the next three nights as even from the comfort of your tent, you are sure to experience moments that you will wish to capture forever. If you are here in dry season, the lagoon is the water source for a colossal population of wildlife including buffalo and herds of elephant. But at anytime of the year you are sure to have fantastic sightings at this beautiful camp in the stunning Selinda Reserve.
As with all good things your adventure must come to an end but we are sure that like us you will remember this as one of the most magical experiences of your life.
