Grootberg Lodge

Damaraland, Namibia

Grootberg Lodge feels like its perched on the edge of the world, with stupendous views over Damaraland and the Klip River valley. Fully owned by the local community, it’s an inspiring place to enjoy both the grandeur of nature and the authenticity of Namibian life.

Accommodation is simple rather than luxurious but has everything you need for a comfortable stay in the desert. Rock chalets are filled with carvings and wooden furniture, while the functional bathroom has hot water heated by a wood-burning stove. We love the views from the communal lounge, but then again, we love the views from everywhere at Grootberg Lodge, not least the shimmering infinity pool that stands on the edge of the Etendeka Plateau.

Grootberg Lodge is owned by the local community and we love how friendly everyone is. The community is proud of their lifestyle and goes out of its way to reveal the true image of Africa. Activities aren’t included with the accommodation but we’d highly recommend a hike with one of the local guides.

Damaraland is an escape and Grootberg Lodge is as escapist as it comes. It’s located in a private concession on the eastern edge of Damaraland, so makes an ideal one-night stop when travelling from Etosha. However, we’d really recommend two or three nights to make the most of the surrounding area; few places in Africa are so remote yet can make you feel so welcomed.
