Nestled in Okonjima Nature Reserve - renowned for its incredible sightings of cheetah, leopard and brown hyena - this large, laidback and friendly lodge fuses contemporary style with authentic African charm.
We love the Plain Camp Barn, a huge communal area spread across two levels that’s inspired by the Hanssen’s family cattle-farming heritage. The high metal roof leaves space for huge floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the plains, while exposed brick, concrete floors and a mix of tin and wooden furnishings add an industrial touch to the otherwise African décor. The barn boasts an open-plan living and dining area, a cool bar, and even WiFi for keeping-up-to-date as you enjoy being in the middle of the wilderness. The large outdoor lounge area features a swimming pool.
There are three categories of room here: 10 View Rooms, 14 Standard Rooms and six Garden Rooms. Though the most affordable, we would skip the Garden Rooms with their views of the original homestead garden in favour of the View or Standard Rooms with their enviable views of the wildlife abundant plains. The View Rooms are the largest, with an expansive outdoor deck with two daybeds and loungers, whilst the Standard Rooms are smaller with a little veranda and two canvas director chairs.
There are plenty of wonderful walking trails to explore here, and you could enjoy a guided birdwatching hike with one of the knowledgeable guides or a brilliant game drive too. The other activities come at an extra cost, including visiting AfriCat's Information & Carnivore Care Day Centre and embarking on a night drive.
