Desert Homestead Outpost
Sesriem/Sossusvlei, Namibia
Desert Homestead Outpost has quickly established itself as a great alternative to the more famous Sossusvlei lodges. It’s literally set apart from the rest, some 20 miles from the entrance of Namib-Naukluft National Park. This seclusion helps the lodge showcase the wonders of the desert, without any other vehicles or people interrupting your photos.
Each of the 11 small houses has a modern design and feels like a cross between a traditional lodge and modern hotel. There’s a decadent bathroom, shaded sundeck, air conditioning, and most of the mod cons. But our favourite feature is the private sleeper deck, where you can spend the night on a star bed beneath the desert’s stars. We’d highly recommend it for at least one of your nights.
The central areas include a swimming pool and an indoor dining room with a crackling winter fire. We think that it’s all a step up in quality from the lodge’s older sister property, Desert Homestead.
This luxury lodge really comes into its own with the activities on offer. While they’re not all included as standard, we can pre-book adventures like horse safaris that last two hours to many days, nature drives, beautiful excursions to Sossusvlei, plus guided hikes. We must also complement the lodge on the unguided hiking trails, which are ideal for couples seeking their private piece of a very famous desert.
