Onguma The Fort
Etosha, Namibia
The most luxurious of the accommodation options in the private Onguma Reserve, this stylish lodge celebrates the iconicity of the Etosha ecosystem. Wild animals frequent the small waterhole and the surrounding area is packed with enchanting sights.
This is a relaxed lodge at heart, revolving around languid hours watching the wildlife world go by. We love the main tower, where you sip sundowners while lounging on cushions and following the animals at the water. Each of the 12 rooms is a long distance from the next, enhancing the feeling of nature and seclusion. Designed in a distinctive Moroccan style, they resemble old-world desert forts, although there’s plenty of new-world luxury on the inside.
For wildlife viewing it’s hard to rival Onguma The Fort. Just roll up the canvas front wall in the morning and there’s likely to be a few animals wandering past. As it’s just a few miles from the eastern entrance of Etosha, you’re in the perfect location for spending a morning in the national park. Schedules are usually fixed, so you return for lunch then enjoy afternoon and nighttime drives in the Onguma Reserve.
The opportunity to explore two adjacent destinations is a real highlight and we’ve found the trackers to have exceptional local knowledge. Rhinos, big cats, elephants, an array of antelopes...spend three days here and you’ll be discovering the best of Etosha.
