Jacana Camp

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Surrounded by the idyllic waters of the Okavango Delta, Jacana Camp has the perfect location for an iconic water-based safari. Throughout most of the year you can only reach the camp by boat, a charming journey that quickly envelops you in the wildlife of the private Jao Reserve.

We love how the camp reflects all the dreamy preconceptions of the Okavango Delta. Hippos lounge in the tropical channels, antelopes splash up water, while the delightful birdlife contrasts the huge roving elephants. It all provides a wonderful introduction to what the Delta is all about, most notably the magical sense of seclusion and serenity.

There are only six tented chalets, all comfortably adorned and carefully spaced, so it always feels like you have the whole Delta to yourself. Each has a private verandah and the double outdoor showers have legendary views. We’ve often been lounging around, watching everything from Pel’s fishing owls to rumbustious giants.

Most activities are on the water and you’ll mix motorboat excursions with enchanting journeys in traditional mokoro canoes. You can game drive at low water times from September to April, although we’d recommend the option of a day’s drive at nearby Hunda Island instead, where there’s much more big game.
