Sand Rivers Selous
Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania
When Richard Bonham chose a spot to create Sand Rivers, he did so wonderfully. Overlooking a river adorned with hippos and swooping Kingfishers, this lodge is truly inspired by its tranquil surroundings. We love that both the mess area and the cottages are all open-fronted to take advantage of the phenomenal views.
With only eight cottages altogether, Sand Rivers becomes your own personal hideaway. All of the rooms are spacious and evoke the sense of rustic luxury, with light colours and thatched roofs. There are five Riverside rooms with an ensuite bathroom, and three Hillside Suites featuring a large living space and plunge pool.
We love to spend the early evenings sitting by the bar, swapping stories with other travellers, or relaxing in the pool whilst drinking in the views of the peaceful river. Though luxurious, Sand Rivers’ focus is to create a sense of being in the wild, and so the only soundtrack you’ll hear is the grunt of a hippo and pretty birdsong.
Peel yourself off one of the cosy sofas and you’ll find that Sand Rivers has a myriad of fantastic safari opportunities, from calm boat safaris along the river, to hopping on a game drive through the rugged landscapes.
