The Plantation Lodge & Safaris

Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

Lush tropical gardens complement the drama of safari at The Plantation Lodge. Rooms are dotted amongst eucalyptus and banana trees, hidden in gardens that are alive with butterflies and tropical birds. Situated close to both Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara, it’s ideal as both a stopover and a safari base.

The Plantation Lodge evokes the style of the German colonial era and there are plenty of old-world features on display, especially in the light and airy dining room. Rooms are spacious and have a very cosy fireplace. We think they’re perfect for an overnight on route to the crater or the Serengeti.

Suites are larger and feel more private, so we’d choose these for a multi-day stop. Spend three nights and you can have a full day on safari in both Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater. We really like the free activities at the lodge, which include guided walks and visits to a coffee plantation. They showcase a different side to Tanzania.

This is a delightfully tranquil base if you’re seeking a laid-back safari experience. It’s also a great place to start a safari adventure on Tanzania’s northern circuit, with homely accommodation that contrasts the exotic tented camps you’ll find elsewhere.
