Birkenhead Villa
Garden Route, South Africa
Hermanus is Africa’s whale watching capital. At Birkenhead Villa you can admire the show from your own verandah. We’ll never forget following two southern right whales from our bedroom, a mother and calf playing as sunset painted the sky; then opening the curtains to another pair the following morning. Sometimes you’ll see over a dozen whales without even leaving the property.
Location makes Birkenhead Villa so ideal. It’s nestled above Walker Bay and a whale watching cliff path, within a few steps of a sheltered sandy beach. Cape Fold Mountain dramatically dominate the backdrop while a beautiful garden and pool are ideal for languid evenings.
The villa only has five rooms. They come complete with a complementary minibar and an outstanding level of personalised service. A chef will discuss your culinary wishes and the staff are great with children. It all adds up to a property that you never want to leave, especially when marine giants are breaching in the still waters of Walker Bay below.
It’s worth taking your time here, settling into the tranquil atmosphere and soaking up the bounty of the coast. Shark diving at Gansbaii is within a 30-minute drive and there are some inspiring options for walking and cycling nearby. Birkenhead Villa will even give you a picnic and umbrellas for an afternoon on the beach.
Very welcoming for children and highly recommended for families. There’s lots of space along with activities for small children and baby sitting options.
The main whale watching season is from June to December.
