Borana Lodge
Laikipia Conservancy Areas, Kenya
Sprawling across a huge private ranch, Borana tears up the typical safari rulebook, offering a unique and exhilarating experience with Africa’s biggest animals. Spotting critically-endangered black rhinos is always special and at Borana Lodge there’s a chance of seeing them on walking, horseback, and mountain bike safaris.
The wildlife here is varied, encompassing elephant and cheetah plus lesser-known species like oryx and Grevy’s zebra. We love the different ways to see it all. With an armed guard you can walk past some of Africa’s giants, or peddle past on mountain bikes. With three stables and over 50 horses, rides in the saddle are outstanding and can be tailored to all experience levels. Serene yet startling, these safaris really connect you to the wild. Day and nighttime game drives go off the trail and the intimacy is astonishing.
Perhaps our favourite aspect of Borana is the lodge itself, an old-world English country home that’s packed with antiques and original wooden features. Each of the lodge’s eight cottages retain a rustic style and there are some excellent kids rooms, which are tailored towards families at a vastly discounted price. All rooms are exceptionally appointed and share a sparkling infinity swimming pool.
Most of all, we love the laid-back style at Borana. You create a personal safari program with enthusiastic, friendly guides, with enough to keep you entertained for many many days.
