Lake Naivasha, Kenya
One of Kenya’s oldest colonial homesteads, Loldia House immerses visitors in the atmosphere of yesteryear. Wooden beams, antique furniture, afternoon tea served on the lawn...there’s a glamour and grandeur to staying here, one that always has us wanting to return.
The house is set on a sprawling private farm, where wild animals live alongside livestock. You’ll enjoy a succession of intriguing sights, although the real safari charms come from game drives in nearby Hell’s Gate or even Lake Nakuru national parks. Don’t miss the opportunity for a nighttime drive though, which regularly encounters elusive hunters like aardvarks and bat-eared foxes. You certainly won’t miss the hippos; their raucous antics will be a constant throughout your stay.
We’re captivated by how an old-world style can blur into Kenyan safari wilderness; colobus monkeys swing past while you’re fine dining, log fires roar as hippos are grazing, and breakfast is served beneath vast fig trees. If you’re on a tented camp holiday then one or two nights here are ideal for returning to traditional luxuries.
The new dining room transports you back in time to the explorer's era, where you can enjoy an idyllic candlelit dinner before retreating to the snug bar area for a relaxed tipple. During the day, take a dip in the infinity pool and look out onto the verdant gardens where you may discover small creatures soaking up the sun too.
A wide range of activities are possible in the surrounding area, most of them half-day trips to wildlife-filled parks or spectacular volcanic remains. As such, Loldia House also works well as a leisurely multi-day stop that blends nature with relaxing activities.
