Lions Bluff Lodge
Tsavo West National Park, Kenya
The views from Lions Bluff Lodge are otherworldly, with the plains of Kenya stretching out far into the distance. It’s worth coming here just to capture the panoramas, but then you’re welcomed by enthusiastic staff and an atmosphere that entices everyone to stay longer than they’d anticipated.
Tranquility reigns and the lodge makes an ideal interlude on an adventurous safari program. Each of the 12 rooms are widely spaced so there’s plenty of privacy for couples and families. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows enclose the lounge, the sundowner terrace has a sparkling location, and we can never get enough of the 270-degree vista from the bar area. Rooms are reached on high wooden walkways and they feel a little like luxury tree houses. For the very reasonable price, it’s hard to find anything as spectacular elsewhere in East Africa.
With such a stunning setting there’s less of an emphasis on the safari activities. It’s more a place to relax than go on an adventure, although you can enjoy nature walks and nighttime drives. Morning and afternoon game drives are the norm and they explore the private Lumo Sanctuary, where elephants and buffalos are major highlights.
The lodge is situated between Tsavo West and the white beaches of Kenya’s southern coast. It’s rare that safari activities enter the national park but the whole area is unfenced and there’s lots of game wandering in the Lumo Sanctuary. While the lodge makes it feel like you’re on top of the world, the rumbustious elephant herds provide a quick reminder of who is the boss around here.
