Karisia Walking Safaris

Laikipia Conservancy Areas, Kenya

We’re all about the authentic experiences here at Africa Sky, and a walking safari is one of our favourite ways to become spellbound by Africa’s allure. Karisia has this ethos in mind – helping you discover the beauty of Laikipia by focusing on incredible walking safaris.

We have chosen Karisia as our key partner as they are incredibly experienced at walking safaris. They have a unique and wonderful location for you to hike and watch wildlife on foot and work with us to tailor every trip to your needs meeting wildlife interests, fitness levels and group sizes – including many families who enjoy the adventure of this activity. For those not quite so fit, or with young children, camels can accompany you with their handler so you can hop on and off as you wish to rest your legs whilst still enjoying the wilderness experience.

Setting up camp in one of Laikipia’s many conservancies, Karisia offers an amazing playground in which you can explore by foot, rock climb, and track animal prints with your expert guides. Their walking safaris give you the chance to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness and get closer to wildlife than you would in a vehicle.

The main attraction of Karisia is the mobile walking safaris where camels and staff will transport your tents and luggage to each location. You do have the option of staying at the base camp Tumaren, an eco-tented camp that overlooks a beautiful extensive plain adorned with a striking rock kopje. What we love more is that the owners of Karisia, Kerry and James, originally made this camp their home. Nowadays, there’s just six sleeping tents and two more tents for you to relax in, all lit up by solar lights and decorated with African rugs.

Tumaren Base Camp is great to include at the start or end of a longer walking experience.  It offers a true eco-friendly safari experience. Though there is running water, it’s all heated by firewood and bought into camp by tractor, and the bottled water is filtered rain water that the owners collect and filter themselves at their ranch. There are no fences in front of the tents, but there’s always a security guard to keep you safe and heat up the water each morning.

The mobile tented camp usually moves with your journey each day with no impact to the environment. We can also arrange this if you prefer to stay in one place as there is always the same cosy space to come back to after each walk, and each tent is equipped with luxury bedding, hot bucket showers, personal toilets and solar lights.  Your walks will then head off in a different direction each day and then loop back to camp.

The walking safaris here are amazing. Laikipia is renowned for its beautiful wildlife including zebra, elephant, wild dog and myriad of bird species, and the passionate guides are well versed in tracking these creatures and getting you a close but safe view of life on the plains. In between exploring by foot, you also have the opportunity to enjoy a bush picnic, rock climb, visit the nearby Kimanjo school, learn to make a spear or visit the camel creche.
