Laikipia Conservancy Areas, Kenya
This homey lodge provides a tranquil base for exploring the fabulous game of Lewa Conservancy. With its cosy atmosphere and quaint sense of grandeur, we think it’s ideal if you’re planning an extended stay in any of the Laikipia conservancies.
Lewa Wilderness has been around for over three decades and we’ve enjoyed witnessing its development. It’s evolved into a rustic luxury lodge, yet has maintained the ambience of its previous incarnation, a relaxed and informal camp. There are three large family cottages plus six hillside cottages that would suit couples. All are spacious and resemble a quaint country home, with stone walls and thatched roofs. We love the cosy feel this creates, a sharp contrast to the wild plains that stretch out in all directions.
While the lodge is about relaxation, the activities ensure there’s always plenty of adventure on the menu. Horse riding safaris can be handcrafted for all ability levels, camel safaris can last a morning or a few days, while a morning at a local Masai community is very insightful and non-commercial. An incredible added extra is an aerial safari in the lodge owner’s retro bi-plane. Of course, there will also be game drives and we love how they go off the trail to bring personal moments with a rich variety of wildlife.
This is a lodge that encourages you to settle in and take things slowly, which will appeal to many visitors on a longer Kenyan safari. The lodge goes the extra mile to provide interesting activities for children. There’s also a babysitting service.
